Abstract : The present study was conducted to determine the efficacy of Tinidazole (Fasigyn) in the treatment of periodontal diseases. Two groups of adult periodontitis patients (Russell's index score 6)were divided into 2 groups: GROUP I:20 patients were treated with scaling and root planning plus mitronidazole (flagyl). GROUP II:20 patients were treated with scaling and root planning plus Tinidazole All the patients were given oral hygiene instructions and submitted to clinical study including : Plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, loss of attachment *A biopsy was taken from each patient and was prepared for histological examination. The clinical study and taking a biopsy were performed two times, one before the start of the treatment and other 4 weeks later. The following results and conclusions were obtained: 1-There was significant improvement (clinical and histological) with treatment of adult periodontitis with Tinidazole(Fasigyn). 2-The improvement obtained with Tinidazole(Fasigyn) was parallel to that obtained with mitronidazole(Flagyl), in combination with scaling and root planning but without the adverse gastrointestinal reactions of Flagyl. 3-Tinidazole(Fasigyn)can be considered as a valuable drug against oral and anaerobic bacteria which gives rapid and good improvement. 4-Further investigations about the efficacy of Tinidazole in the treatment of different categories of periodontitis must be performed.
