Abstract : Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder which represents an important public health problem because of its serious economic implications as well as its social impact on the family and community (Gas taut et al.,1973; Baumann et al.,1977). In developing countries, th~-actual prevalence---- of the disease is not ascertain, as most of the available information are derived from hospital based data (Baumann et al.,1977; Zander et al.,1979; and Goodman,1983). It was e~ trmated that in a~a~where medical care was insufficient, the total prevalence may reach 8/1000 of the population with frequent severe seizures reported to be 3/1000 population (Gas taut et al.,1973). The incidence rate of the disease was esti~ecrby Kurtzke (1985) to range between 20 and 70/ 100,000 population and Garnieri (1983) reported that males are hav~ng higher incidence than females. The best method for obtainin~ population based data is to develop registries of community health information.Throu~h such registries, assessment of clinical course of the disease, identirication of factors associated with its occurrence as well as evaluation of existin~ health care measures for its cont-~l could be conducted (WHO,1987). :he study was conducted with the aim of dete~ination of ~ incidence and prevalence of e?ilepsy among health in- ~~~ workers in Alexandria as well as assessment of t~e e:i3~~ registration systea a~J c~v~l~pment of a n~~ one. Dresented in Table (II). During the study period 45 new active cases were diagnosed giving an incidence rate of 5.95/100,000 insured persons. The incidence rate was insignificantly_ h~gheramong males (6.2:1/100,000) than females (5.15/100,000); X 1= 0.26. - Table (III) shows that the point prevalence rate of ac- _ tive epilepsy among health insured population in Alexandria as on 28th of February 1989 was 141.4/100,000 beneficiaries. The prevalence rate among males (156.1/100,000) was2significantly higher than that of females (92.7/100,OOO),X 1=38.31.
